Tobacco Use Disorder

Tobacco use disorder is a prevalent substance use disorder in the United States that has significant health consequences. Tobacco use disorder involves the maladaptive pattern of nicotine consumption through smoking or smokeless tobacco products that results in impairment or distress for the user. The addiction potential of cigarettes is considered on par with other commonly abused substances like alcohol. The lifetime risk of having a tobacco use disorder is estimated to be 20-30% among those who experiment with smoking, which is notably higher than the 10-15% risk for alcohol use disorder among those who try alcohol(Leone & Evers-Casey, 2022).

  • Identify the substance or addiction with discussion on pertinent diagnostic criteria for the use disorder.

Tobacco use disorder, as defined in the DSM-5, involves a problematic pattern of tobacco use that causes clinically significant impairment or distress as exhibited by at least two of eleven specified criteria occurring within a 12-month period(Leone & Evers-Casey, 2022).
