SOLUTION

Sepsis is one of the leading causes of morbidity, mortality, and increased inpatient costs in our hospitals today. It is a life-threatening, systemic infection that causes organ dysfunction (Mollnes & Huber 2020). In 2017 the World Health Organization declared sepsis a global health priority. In the United States, they are about 1.7 million cases of sepsis each year, and about 270 000 people die of sepsis or sepsis complications each year (Sepsis Alliance, 2018). Sepsis imposes a significant burden on healthcare. In the United States, 6% of all hospitalizations are from sepsis, and 35% of all hospital deaths are caused by sepsis (Sepsis Alliance, 2018). Nurses can identify the risks for sepsis early using a nurse-driven screening tool as part of their daily assessment, improving patient outcomes and reducing the chances of developing sepsis.

In adult patients (P), does the use of sepsis screening tool driven by nurses (I) compared to not using a screening tool (C) affect early recognition and sepsis treatment (O) over six weeks (T)?
