Overview

You are meeting with the parents of a child being evaluated for ADHD. The child meets criteria based on DSM5 for an ADHD diagnosis through the subjective and objective data provided.

SOLUTION

People suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show a recurrent pattern of hyperactivity-impulsivity and/or inattention that disrupts normal development or functioning. In line with the DSM5 criteria, there is the inattentive type diagnosis criterion where the patient displays poor listening, forgets day-to-day activities, and has a diminished attention span, among other symptoms. Further, there is the hyperactive/impulsive type diagnosis criterion involving the patient being overly talkative, incapability of being seated in class, and marked restlessness that is challenging to control (Silverstein et al., 2020).
