Solution

Primary Diagnosis:  __ Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of the primary diagnosis in your own words. What are the patient’s risk factors for this diagnosis?
Pathophysiology of Primary Diagnosis
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition where chyme back up from the stomach into the esophagus periodically.  The Pathophysiology of the mechanism for the development of this disorder often results from abnormalities in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which may include relaxation, decreased pressure, or GE disruption. Other factors involved in the pathogenesis of GERD include poor esophageal acid clearance, with increased volume and causticity, hypersensitivity to gastric acid, and defects in esophagogastric motility
